All you need to know about Coron

All you need to know about Coron, is a small and wonderful island, located in the province of Palawan, whose main city is called Coron Town.

Coron is home to a number of unique and breathtaking places.

What makes this place best known is the handful of wrecks of the World War II that are permanently buried in this area.

Day trips depart from Coron around wild islets, lagoons or volcanic lakes where you can swim and admire nature in its majestic spontaneity.

Going around the bay by boat, you can immerse yourself in a dimension of pure communion with nature.

You will see beautiful blue, azure and emerald seabeds and you will be able to admire the marvelous limestone rocks covered by the green of the plants.

The thrill of diving into the large and peaceful local sacred lakes, surrounded only by silence and gigantic rock formations, is certainly something priceless.

If you visit Coron you can truly claim to be on one of the most beautiful and unique islands in the world.

How to get there

The fastest way to reach the island is to take a flight from Manila or Cebu City to land at Coron Airport (Busuanga).

Important to book your flight during the day as Coron Airport has no runway lights and flights do not land after dark.

The cheapest way is by ferry from Manila and Puerto Princesa.

The ferry that goes from Manila to Coron takes 15 hours and leaves twice a week, the one that goes from Puerto Princesa to Coron takes about 10 hours.

Another way to get to Coron is via El Nido.

If by any chance you should pass by this splendid place on your trip, you should know that from El Nido there are frequent ferries that take you to Coron in about two hours.

What to see and what to do in Coron

The main attractions of Coron are small surrounding islands, wreck sites, lagoons and many natural and beautiful places that can only be reached by boat.

Therefore, to fully enjoy your trip to Coron you will need to organize tours and boat excursions to visit the attractions.

Tours and excursions can be easily booked directly at your hotel or at any tourist agency you will find on the island or all you need to know about Coron can find keep reading this post.

Here is a guide to the most beautiful places on the island:

Kayangan Lake

Considered the “cleanest lake in the world”, it can be reached via a short scenic walk, with a stop where you can take beautiful photos of the panorama.

The brackish lake is part of a much larger sacred complex: here you can visit underwater caves where swifts nest.

The main point of view that many people know is not actually the lake, but the bay on the other side of Coron Island.

Siete Pecados

It is a marine park quite close to the island of Busuanga, it is a really well-preserved snorkeling spot, with still colorful corals and a very rich underwater life.

Twin Lagoon

It is a double lagoon (twin lagoon), characterized by crystal clear water and a crystalline blue color.

The two lagoons are connected by an underwater passage about a couple of meters wide.

At low tide it is really easy to swim from one lagoon to another, while when the high tide arrives the passage sinks completely, becoming about one and a half meters deep.

However, it is always possible to reach the second lagoon via a wooden ladder.

A true experience not to be missed.

Barracuda Lake

It is another lake similar to Kayangan Lake perhaps with an even clearer water, for a more peaceful experience visit this lake which is not very crowded with tourists.

This lake also has some interesting features like hot springs and seamounts.

Maquinit hot Spring

It is possible to relax and bathe in these hot springs with a temperature of almost 38° C.

Located outside the city it is possible to reach this site by organizing a trip with a local guide or by hiring a private driver to take you to your destination.

Malwawey Coral Garden

One of the best preserved coral gardens in the area, and probably in all of the Philippines.

In Malwawey it is very easy to come across various tropical fish such as surgeonfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and clownfish.

With a little luck, you may even be able to catch a glimpse of large shoals of sardines, forming almost silver walls in motion about ten meters below the surface of the water.

Hike Mount Tapyas

If you’re looking for some adventure that doesn’t involve boating then hike to the top of Mount Tapyas.

While it is probably not technically a mountain, the view from the top is worth the climb, here you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city of Coron and the island of Coron in the distance.

Coron island Hopping

The island tour around Coron is simply amazing and not to be missed.

It is possible to book it at any tourist agency that you will find on the island of Coron.

Here are the destinations that you will go to visit with the tour:

Malcapuya Island

First stop on the tour of the islands, in Malcapuya you can relax on the beach or snorkel to see the famous “giant clams” up close, the largest mollusk in the world, similar to a huge blue-green oyster.

Where to sleep: all you need to know about Coron

As for the choice of hotels, I recommend staying around the town of Coron Town.

Here in Coron Town the hotels offer more services and enjoy a splendid natural setting, to fully enjoy your stay it is necessary to include excursions by sea that allow you to discover the hidden wonders of Coron.

The resorts on a private island instead offer a coral beach and a more exclusive experience, also suitable for those who want to relax and get away from it all, obviously expect higher prices.

Here there is a list of the best accommodations you can find in Coron island according to Agoda users, thanks also to our experience, click the images below and check the best rates and availability

Info and Utility

There aren’t many choices in Western food in Coron, so if you like Filipino food you are in the right place.

Go scuba diving with “Corto Divers”, their boats are well set up and their staff are very knowledgeable plus, lunch is included with the dives and I have to say it was really good.

There are at least three ATMs in Coron and the fee for each withdrawal is 200 pesos per transaction.

Avoid taking the last flight to get to Coron, especially those that leave late, you can risk your flight being canceled because after dark planes don’t land at Busuanga Coron airport.

Many people compare Coron with El Nido, the answer is simple you have to visit them both, put both stages in your travel program because it is really worth it.

Here are some important tips if you want to go on a trip to Coron:

Currency exchange: we recommend that you exchange money at the various exchange offices located in the city so that you can compare them and choose the most convenient one.

Remember that changing them at the airport is always less convenient, so as soon as you arrive, change only the necessary ones for the first day.

Tourist visa: the tourist visa for the Philippines depends on where you come from, for example, for European citizens for the first 30 days of stay in the country, they do not need a visa.

For more information, visit the Philippine government’s official website HERE.

Medical insurance: medical insurance is absolutely recommended, since private healthcare in the Philippines is very expensive.

We are partners with World Nomads, leader for the international travel insurance, get a free quote by clicking HERE.

Telephone Card: it is possible to buy a telephone card (50 pesos only) as soon as you arrive at the airport, with these cards you have to check for the best internet promo between Globe or Smart.

Transport rental: we recommend renting a bicycle or a scooter in order to be able to move independently.
